Efforts to reduce childhood obesity and improve the overall health of Halifax and Northampton county residents continue with the added component of a new initiatives that encompass a wide cross-section of the areas.

Community leaders across two counties introduced a new campaign Thursday to aid area residents to become healthier.

The Roanoke Valley Community Health Initiative is focused on helping people, particularly children, be more active and more aware of healthful eating. The consortium of 36 entities includes schools, health organizations, churches and more.

Campaign Provides Education, Recreation, and Access to Reduce Childhood Obesity

ROANOKE RAPIDS, NC (August 12, 2014)—The Roanoke Valley Community Health Initiative (RV-CHI) will kick off the “Get Fit, Stay Fit Roanoke Valley” campaign to promote healthy eating and active living among children, families and individuals in Halifax and Northampton Counties.

If numbers are any indication, the Roanoke Valley is taking a real interest in becoming more healthy.

Several hundred people of all ages gathered at Ledgerwood Park Saturday to learn more about eating healthy and moving more at the second annual FamilyFest at Ledgerwood Park.

THE KATE B. REYNOLDS CHARITABLE TRUST ANNOUNCED IT WILL INVEST MORE THAN $1.2 MILLION IN TWO COMPREHENSIVE LOCAL PROGRAMS to support the community’s vision to combat childhood obesity as part of Healthy Places NC, a long-term Trust initiative to improve health and health care in rural, financially disadvantaged counties in North Carolina.
